    The goal The aim of the course is to introduce students to new methods and procedures for risk assessment that can occurarise from the construction or reconstruction of a drainage and irrigation system. A student should develop skills to plan measures to eliminate or mitigate negative environmental impacts and to highlight the positive effects that will occur.
    The outcome The student should identify all environmental impacts, to apply environmental risk assessment procedures, highlight positive effects and apply measures to mitigate negative impacts on the project area. A student should to be trained on how to recognize and determine the size of work to be undertaken. A student is expected to be able to write reports, which is of great practical importance.
    Contents
    Contents of lectures Risk assessment procedure and techniques, scope of EA assessment, forecasting and mitigation measures, management and monitoring, auditing, public participation, uncertainty management. ICID checklist, main impacts of irrigation and drainage on the environment - hydrology, water and air quality, soil properties, erosion and sedimentation, environmental changes, socio-economic impacts.
    Contents of exercises Exercises are followed by lectures, literature review, fieldwork. Students should write an essayes based on literature reviews, application of methods and the research results they came up with.
