The goal | The course should enable students to acquire knowledge of taxonomy and morphology, cultivars and rootstocks, the most important phenological phases, ecological requirements, as well as cultural practices for stone fruit species (plum, peach, apricot, sweet cherry and sour cherry) and nuts (walnut, hazelnut, almond, chestnut, etc.). | |||
The outcome | The student should show knowledge and understanding of the biological properties of stone and nut fruit species, varieties and rootstocks, as well as the technology of cultivation of these species. At the end of the course, the student should be able to recognize varieties, determine the ecological requirements, as well as to apply cultural practices for establishing and maintaining orchards. | |||
Contents | ||||
Contents of lectures | The course is divided into two main chapters: 1) Stone fruits and 2) Nuts. Within the chapter on stone fruit, there are four sub-chapters that include different species of stone fruit: 1) Plum, 2) Peach, 3) Apricot and 4) Sweet and sour cherry. Within the chapter Nuts, there are five sub-chapters: 1) Walnut, 2) Hazelnut, 3) Almond, 4) Chestnut and 5) Other nut species. | |||
Contents of exercises | Introduction to the characteristics of the most economically important varieties of plums, peaches, apricots, sweet cherries, sour cherries, walnuts, hazelnuts and almonds. Application of methods for description and determination of varieties of stone and nut fruit species, as well as for evaluation of fruit quality (external appearance and taste). | |||

Methods of teaching | Theoretical and practical classes in combination with interactive teaching will be held in all areas. During the classes, two tests of knowledge will be conducted, and at the end of the practical classes (exercises), a colloquium will be done. | |||
