The goal | The aim of the course is to have student understand the water uptake, transport and transpiration in plants, the regulation of the plant water regime, the effects of water deficit, floods and anaerobic stress and the mechanisms of plant tolerance to stress. The plant water regime affect plant productivity and this knowledge has practical significance in optimisation of plant growing conditions.
The outcome | At the end of the course, students should demonstrate the knowledge needed to understand the plant water status, to recognize the effects of stress on the water regime and mechanisms of plant tolerance and the solution for the problem of water supply in specific agroecological conditions. It is expected to develop the skills to apply techniques for monitoring parameters of the plant water regime.
Contents | ||||
Contents of lectures | Water as a component in the soil-plant-atmosphere system. Mechanisms of water transport, parameters of the water regime of soil and plants. Regulation and environmental control of water regime. Effects of drought and anaerobic stress on plants - mechanisms of stress tolerance. The interaction of different stress factors. Monitoring of water regime (plants and soil). Methods of deficit irrigation.
Contents of exercises | Introduction to methods of measuring the water status of plants, comparative measurement of the water regime of plants and soil. Measurement in controlled conditions and under irrigation and drainage conditions. Processing and interpreting experimental results and their presentations. Preparation of seminar work.
