The history of the Faculty
The founding of the Faculty of Agriculture
The great Serbian botanist, Josif Pančić (1814-1888), was the first Professor of Earth Sciences at the School of Higher Education in Belgrade and could be considered as the founder of agricultural science. However, the greatest merits for the establishment of the Faculty of Agriculture go to Sima Lozanić (1847-1935), the first professor of Agricultural chemistry and the then rector of the University of Belgrade. Sima Lozanić had great help and understanding about the establishment of the Faculty from) geologist, petrographer and then minister of education Jovan Žujović (1856-1939).
The Faculty was established by the Law on Changes and Amendments to the Law on the University of Belgrade on the 27th of February 1905 ("Official Gazette of the Kingdom of SHS" No. 85, year I, dated August 23rd 1919).
Immediately after the end of the First World War, at the first session of the University Council, held on March 28th in 1919, the rector announced the Act of the Ministry of Education, expressing the desire to open the Faculty of Agriculture at the University of Belgrade. The Faculty started with two main departments: agriculture and forestry. In commemoration of this day, the Faculty marks March 28 as Faculty Day.
Preparations for the opening and commencement operations of the Faculty of Agriculture lasted until the autumn of 1920, and the classes began on December 5th with the introductory speech of the first dean, Dr. Petar Đorđević, full professor of Specific Botany and head of the Ministry of Forests and Mines. The Faculty gradually formed into a significant educational and scientific institution.
In 1930, the Faculty received a new name, the Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry, only to be separated into two independent institutions in 1949: The Faculty of Forestry and The Faculty of Agriculture.
The Faculty of Agriculture and the University of Belgrade
In its century-long history, the Faculty of Agriculture has always been actively engaged in all activities of the University. It has always been an honor for the professors and associates of the Faculty of Agriculture to be in the Council, the committees, commissions and other bodies of the University, which gave them great recognition. The Faculty of Agriculture had its own professors as rectors of the University in three mandates and its professors as vice-rectors for six.
The Faculty of Agriculture also had a large number of professors from other faculties of the University of Belgrade, who held lectures at the Faculty and were very responsible for the formation of many subjects, departments, laboratories etc.
Lecturers from other faculties of the University of Belgrade who taught at our faculty in the first decades of its work were sorted by the teaching areas that the Faculty will always remember:

The Faculty Today
From a modest start with only a few lecturers, three full-time, one assistant professor and three part-time associates, the Faculty of Agriculture is today one of the leading higher education institutions in this region of Europe, with over 500 employees and a number of about 4,500 full-time students.
The Faculty building is an exceptional combination of the classic, Viennese style of the thirties of the last century to which a new, modern addition to the building was merged (1980). The front facade is flamboyant, with figures and ornaments. The interior of the old part of the building is dominated by Renaissance-style stairs and marble poles. Especially impressive is the large amphitheater with its balcony and a capacity of 800 seats.
Scientific research work is carried out through 8 institutes, 31 departments, a large number of specialized accredited laboratories, the experimental farm "Radmilovac", a large number of scientific societies operating within the Faculty, with intensive cooperation with relevant organizations both inside the country and abroad.
In accordance with the European education system, major changes were introduced with the adoption of a new, three-level study concept (basic academic studies, graduate academic studies, specialist academic studies and doctoral academic studies). The reform process is in line with the Bologna Declaration and the new study programs began have been applied since 2007.
