      The goal Acquiring knowledge and understanding of basic groups of microorganisms based on their structure and activity. Topics: cellular structure and function, metabolism, physiology, ecology, genetics of microorganisms and role in human health, agriculture, industry and biogeochemical cycles. Understanding the importance of microorganisms in air, water, soil, interaction with plants and animals.
      The outcome Acquiring knowledge and understanding of the diversity of microorganisms; recognize the types of cellular structure; explain the importance of environmental factors; links biochemical activity and importance in the food industry; master the skill of using a light microscope, determining the number, basic techniques of isolation, cultivation and identification of pure cultures.
      Contents
      Contents of lectures Introduction to microbiology: concept, importance and activity of microorganisms; morphology and cytology of viruses, bacteria and eukaryotes; nutrition, growth and reproduction, influence of environmental factors, metabolic processes; DNA structure and replication, mutations, recombination, recombinant technology; classification, systematics of individual groups; ecology in different systems.
      Contents of exercises Identification of cells of bacteria, yeasts, fungi, algae and protozoa. Comparing the structure of prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells and describing their functions. Application of aseptic techniques and techniques for determining the number of microorganisms. Performing the basic techniques of isolation, cultivation and identification of pure cultures.

      Methods of teaching Teaching will be conducted through classical lectures and laboratory exercises. Methods of interactive teaching, cooperative in groups of students and team teaching will be applied, as well as the use of an electronic learning platform.
