The goal | Knowledge of: influence of soil properties on its fertility and fertilizer application; production, composition and application of fertilizers; determination of required quantities of fertilizers; impact of fertilization on plants and environment. Skills: chemical analyses of soil and fertilizers, interpretation of the results, determination and application of required amounts of fertilizers.
The outcome | At the end of the completed program, the student should have the ability to choose the type and quantity of fertilizers, as well as to determine the time of their application, depending on the results of soil chemical analyses, nutrient demands of plants and characteristics of the fertilizers.
Contents | ||||
Contents of lectures | Soil properties that affect nutrient availability: soil composition, ion exchange, reaction, organic matter, water-air soil regime, oxido-reduction processes. Macro (N, P, K, Mg, Ca, S) and microelements (Fe, B, Cu, Zn, Mn, Mo, Cl, Ni): origin, content, behavior in soil. Types of fertilizers and their properties. Behavior of nutrients from fertilizers in the soil. Effect of fertilization on yield.
Contents of exercises | Soil sampling. Determination of: total and plant-available nitrogen, easily available phosphorus and potassium, and available microelements in soil. Qualitative analysis of ions in solution of unknown fertilizer. Determination of: nitrogen in nitrogen fertilizers, phosphorus in superphosphate, potassium in potassium fertilizers. Mixed fertilizers. Determination of required amount of fertilizer.
